Scheme Agriculture Census
The Govt. of India with the cooperation of States and Union Territory has been
conducting Agricultural census in the country at five yearly intervals regularly
since 1970-71,as a part of World Census of Agriculture undertaken by FAO of United
Nation. This census provide valuable information about changing structure of
Indian Agriculture, which is the backbone of Indian Economy.
The
Agriculture Census in India relies heavily on system of land records prevalent
in large part of the country. In the non-land record state, the census data are
collected through sample surveys. However in the case of U.T.of Lakshadweep;
being group of islands and small in size, updated and comprehensive land
records are not available, the Govt.of India always decide to conduct the census
collecting information in all islands covering 100 % holding in every island /
village through enquiry
method.
The latest
in the series is the Seventh Agriculture Census with reference year 2000-2001
which is followed by an input survey 2001-2002
The whole project of
agricultural census is implemented in three distinct phases, which are
statistically link together but focus on different aspects of agricultural
statistics. In phase-I a list of holdings with their area and social
characteristics of the holders is prepared. In Phase-II detailed data on
agricultural characteristics of holdings are collected from all islands. In
Phase-III. data on input use pattern are collected from selected holdings in
all islands.
During
phase-I viz; the listing phase, data on number and area of operational holdings
according to prescribed size classes for different social groups and sex will be
collected. During this Phase of census, data on basic agricultural
infrastructure available in the islands is also proposed to be collected this
year. In Phase-II, which is the main census operation, the data on following
five aspects will be collected.
i.
Dispersal of holdings.
ii.
Tenancy.
iii.
Land Utilization
iv.
Irrigation status and source wise area irrigated.
v.
Cropping pattern.
By now the Census operation ie. Phase I & II of 7th Agriculture
Census has been completed in all the islands. Scrutiny and checking of Schedules
at field level have been completed and data entry for generation of Table-1 is
in progress.
