a. Veterinary Hospital/Dispensaries.

 

       Three Veterinary Hospitals and six Veterinary Dispensaries are functioning in various islands with the close supervision of Veterinary Assistant Surgeon to provide health coverage to the livestock population, conduct massive vaccination campaign, adopt strict quarantine check measures. It is to point out that this territory is a free zone in the case of RABIES AND RINDERPEST.

 

b. Central/ Regional/ Poultry Farm. 

 

       The central/ regional /poultry farms were established in the eight five-year plan with minimum capacity of 10800 birds, to cater the needs of the people to a considerable extent.

 

c. Hatchery facilities.

 

      One central Hatchery at head quarter island Kavaratti and one Regional Hatchery at Minicoy and four hatchery units at Amini, Androth, Agatti and Kalpeni islands are functioning in this territory for producing sufficient quantities of  chicks.  Hatching eggs are produced from the parent stock maintained by the department at  Central Poultry Farm  Kavaratti and Regional Poultry Farm Minicoy ,Amini , Agatti,  Androth  . Two more new Hatcheries are being installed at Kiltan and Kadmath during current financial year.

 

d. Dairy Unit.

 

      The department operates two Dairy units with limited animals in the islands of Kavaratti and Minicoy. The main objective of these farms is to demonstrate the scientific rearing of dairy animals.

 

e. Veterinary First Aid Center.

 

      Veterinary first aid center is functioning at Bitra to provide first aid services to the birds and animals.

  

f. Veterinary Sub Center.

 

      Veterinary sub centers are functioning under seven Panchayaths with a view to provide primary health care facilities to the doorsteps of the farmers.

 

g. Bull and Buck Units.

 

      One each bull and bucks are maintained all the units except Bitra for the purpose of providing natural services to the animals reared by the small and marginal farmers.

 

h. Mini Ice Cream Center.

 

      This center producing ice creams and supplying to children on  reasonable price. This center also meeting the demands of public during the days of exhibitions / seminars conducted by the Lakshadweep Administration.

 

i.  Fodder Development Units. 

 

      Fodder development units are functioning in the islands of Androth, Kalpeni and Minicoy.  This units meeting the minimum requirements of Animals since large-scale fodder cultivation is not possible due to scarcity of land.

 

j. Artificial Insemination Center.

 

       Five Artificial Insemination centers are functioning in different islands for genetic up gradation of cattle through artificial insemination network in accordance with breeding policy. Department proposed to extend A.I facilities to two more islands viz.  Kalpeni and Kadamath.
